Kingdom of Ruins

About the Book

Title: Kingdom of Ruins
Author: D.C. Marino
Genre: Fantasy
Release Date: July 27, 2018

In the Lands Within, history does not rest. Each archaeological layer communicates with the living generation, choosing its friends and enemies—and its kings. But an alliance has been struck no one could have anticipated, and an ancient evil is soaking into the soil. History is being erased, purchased and re-written at a terrible price. And a kingdom that shouldn’t have been forgotten is fading from memory. In the Lands Without, archaeologist Lori Brickland has found a pottery shard with a heartbeat. The pulse might be a trick of the mind, or it might be the first sign of life in a world of ruin. An exiled traveler will say she shouldn’t search for the truth, a calculating ruler will say she’s the one he’s looking for. And the kingdom? The kingdom will need her before the end. It’s time to accept what she’s always known…

This isn’t archaeology.

This is war.

About the Author

D.C. Marino is a dedicated reader of history books and fantasy novels, both of which occupy an equal amount of space on her bookshelves. But it wasn’t until she realized how one breathed life into the other that she became addicted to finding the intersections of the real world and the fairy story. Still more: what those intersections about us as a creative, curious people. Kingdom of Ruins is her debut novel.

My Review:

Lori ends up in Fantasy land as I called it after following Thane( she know who he was at the time). This is a continuation series that leaves you wandering what will happen in the next book. Lori is an Archaeologist following in her family footsteps, mainly her grandpa.

This is book one of the series and a very good start. Definitely had some interesting characters and scenes that grabbed my attention. I am still trying to get into the genre of fantasy. I do love reading about artifacts and history of them. Definitely anyone that loves this Genre will love this book. I am looking forward to reading the next book to see what happens next.

I received an complementary copy of the book from Celebrate Lit, I was not required to write an positive review. This is my own opinion.

Guest Post from D.C. Marino

Hi everyone! I’m so excited to share Kingdom of Ruins with you! This story has been on my heart and mind for over ten years now, so this feels a bit surreal. I’d love to tell you a bit about why I wrote this book. But in order to do that, I need to tell you why I almost didn’t. Fantasy. It isn’t real. Why should I spend time writing a story that doesn’t grapple with the actual issues of the day? Why not speak plainly, instead of inventing another world to explore the real one? These were the questions I asked myself every night before I fell asleep. I adored fiction that transported me to factual events, or introduced me to historical figures, but every time I picked up a pen, the fantastical wiggled out of it. I was afraid I was writing the wrong story. This story oddly (or not so oddly) enough began with Lori, an atephobic archaeologist. Meaning she had a passion for archaeology, but a phobic fear of ruins. Why would she shrink back from the work she loved? Because no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t make whole the broken. Life ends in dust, and that’s all there is to it. I felt the same way. Not only was I writing something I wasn’t sure would be relevant, but could it mend anything? Make a difference? Or was it futile, like trying to resurrect the past? What I found was exactly what Lori begins to find in Kingdom of Ruins. That even though things seem unfixable, it isn’t the end. The world Lori enters is full of darkness and peril, but it also holds a chance for her to heal from more than just her fear. While I wrote, and especially as I neared the last chapter, I realized she and I had both overcome a great challenge. I won’t tell you her conclusion, but I will tell you mine:
I wrote the right story.
I hope you enjoy every bit of the journey as I did, dear reader. D.C. Marino

Evil Forebodings

A conservative small town. One woman with a gift. A supernatural battle with lives at stake.

Tiffany Rodgers has been blessed with the gift of animal communication. It’s not always been easy, but she is able to help others using her gifts. For no apparent reason, a stalker is threatening her, at the same time that she’s dealing with terrifying nightmares. Will her new ally, Officer Allen Lawrence understand her gift? Can she clarify her forebodings of evil, cope with the messages written in blood, and help find her kidnapped friend before more harm comes to Newville or herself? The time has come for Tiffany take a stand and fight for her safety and her sanity.

What people are saying about Evil Forebodings:

“When Christian belief is challenged by spiritual forces of darkness in a small town. . .who will ultimately triumph? You’ll need to read Evil Forebodings to discover the answer for yourself.
“A supernatural, paranormal novel with plenty of suspense and a bit of romance. From page one, I was getting tingles down my spine. I would recommend this novel to readers that enjoy supernatural, paranormal, suspense stories.”

Jeepers, Creepers, you won't want to close those peepers! If you like scary books then you will like this one. This touches on spiritual warfare and the unseen evil that goes on in the world. I like that she wrote about the pastor and other believers praying during the town's battle with darkness and evil.”

“The storyline was fascinating and unique. I loved that Tiffany could communicate with animals and that spiritual gifts and warfare are such a huge part of the story.”

About the Author:

Carol E. Keen enjoys fresh coffee, hot tea, and a good book. She was published for several years in FAMA magazine (Freshwater And Marine Aquarium) as a contributing editor. She published her first book on CD, called Simply Seahorses. She now resides in Alabama with her husband and family and spends her time writing, reading, working in photography, and being with her much loved critters.

My Review:

A very different kind of book that I normally read. Tiffany Rogers has an stalker and others around her is in danger also. Allen is the police officer that is trying to protect her. The part I enjoyed was the dog and cat in it and how the dog and Tiffany were so close. Tiffany was a pet sitter but story didn’t get involved in that, I was hoping would of been. It did have a lot of suspense in it at times that did keep me interested. The part of interesting when they were trying to figure out writing the bad guy left behind. I received an complementary copy of the book from Celebrate Lit. I was not required to write an positive review.

My Backstory
Intrigue under Western Skies Series, Book 3
Revealed
Back when I watched television, drama series were my favorite—Little House of the Prairie, the Waltons, the Virginian. I was caught up in the lives of these characters and looked forward to seeing what they were up to each week. For much the same reason, I enjoy writing episodic series. Intrigue under Western Skies, a blended genre, historical romantic suspense series falls in this category. Some of the characters show up in every book, with new ones added along the way. But the books can be read out of sequence since each one has a different premise and plot. In Revealed, Book 3 of Intrigue under Western Skies, I wanted to give Colt Holliman, previously introduced as a secondary character, his own HEA. Also, it seemed the time to reveal what happened to Rhyan Cason’s mother, the woman who’d caused so much angst in the first two books. More importantly, it gave me the opportunity to introduce Katherine, the sister he never knew existed. Unexpectedly, my research led me to the history of show business, and how it developed through the Wild West shows of the nineteenth century. From that, a mystery evolved. The spiritual thread running through Revealed explores the emotions of a young woman who discovers blood relatives have been hidden from her. Can she accept and love her new family and forgive the sins of her parents? Maybe the greatest insight I gained from writing Revealed is that one can never trust his own heart without first trusting God.

My Review:

I really enjoyed the story of Katherine and Colt. Has mystery, suspense, excitement to keep you on the edge of your seat. It is part of a series but a stand alone book. So if you haven’t read the other books you will still enjoy it even though the whole series is good. It is like watching an western movie, has good guys and bad and a lot of family. I really enjoyed the closeness of the family and friends. Also involved an circus show that was enjoyable. I cannot think of anything I did not like about the book. It was very interesting from start to finish. At times I just wanted to talk to the characters like they were real. I received an complementary copy of the book from Celebrate Lit. I was not required to write an positive review.

Misstep Review Blast

Strangest Town on Earth

Pastor Hugh Foster: His heart was in the right place, even if, in hindsight, it appeared he’d clearly taken leave of his senses.

It’s December in Road’s End, Virginia, a tiny town long forgotten by anyone but its residents, where Colonel Hugh Foster and his wife, Melanie, have chosen to live—for better or worse. The jury’s still out on that one!

Road’s End is comprised entirely of senior citizens whose kids have grown and left for greener pastures. Hugh, Melanie, and Bristol (one of the few sane people in town) are faced with a crumbling church in desperate need of repair and renovation, a dwindling congregation of opinionated, ornery senior citizens, and a camel—yes, a camel. And if that's not enough, the trio and the rest of the Road's End residents are soon mired in danger and intrigue when a group of gun-toting drug dealers arrive in town, bent on killing the church handyman, and conspiring to ruin the doggonedest record-breaking blizzard the town has ever seen.

Poor drug dealers.

About the Author:
Deborah Dee Harper writes from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and specializes in humorous, inspirational Christian books for both children and adults. Her novel, Misstep, is the first book in her Road’s End series for adults (although children are welcome to read them as well). She’s also written a children’s adventure series, Laramie on the Lam, that is inspirational, humorous, and full of fun. (Many of Laramie’s fans are adults!)

My Review:

This is one of those books that you really have to keep reading to the end to appreciate it. The book is in first person and I had to figure out who the chapter was about since changed with every other chapter. Hugh and Melanie moved to River’s Bluff. Hugh is a preacher but did not come there to preach but ended up the towns preacher wanted to retire. Definitely some surprises in the story, mystery and is very inspirational. Emma is up in age but full of surprises of what she can do. The town is not boring and has some excitement. I received an complementary copy of the book from Celebrate Lit, I was not required to write an positive review.

Title: This Freedom Journey
Author: Misty M. Beller

Adrien Lockman is through with the political unrest and bloodshed in his home country of France, so he sets off to the Canadian territory’s mountain frontier, in search of a place where a man can live his own life in peace. The last thing he expects to find is a woman, half-starved and half-frozen in a shack nestled among the towering peaks of the great Rocky Mountains. Mary Standish thought she’d finally found a place where she was accepted, trapping with her husband for the Hudson Bay Company. But when he dies after a gruesome grizzly fight, she determines to carry on their work. After all, life in these remote mountains is better than enduring the scorn and snubs of “civilized” folk. When she’s forced to face a winter harder than any she’s endured yet, her stubbornness may just be the death of her. Until a stranger appears at her ramshackle door. Adrien had planned to explore the mountain country all winter before he settles down to build a farm in the spring, but he can’t leave this woman to die in the elements. Even though she seems desperate for him to go. As Mary regains strength, she’s torn between wanting to save her dignity, and craving the respect of this man who’s slipped past her defenses. A Inside Look at the Cover for This Freedom Journey

My book covers are one of my favorite parts of the creative process! With most of my books, I have the cover done early, usually as I’m first brainstorming the story. I love to have the heroine on my cover, and I work hard to make sure the woman on the front matches the heroine I’m envisioning for the story. That way I can describe her in the novel the way she looks on the cover. Sometimes I even work in the outfit she’s wearing on the cover! This Freedom Journey is a novella in my Heart of the Mountains series, so I wanted the cover to be similar in layout and style to the other books in that series. The setting is winter in the Canadian Rockies, so I knew Mary (the heroine) had to be bundled warmly! Funny story: Mary is mentioned in the other two books, although they’re set later in her life. When I first described her in the other books, I imagined her with amber brown eyes. When I chose the final cover for This Freedom Journey, I had to go back and change the amber brown eyes in those other manuscripts to the riveting blue on the cover. 😊

My Review:

I really enjoyed this book. Full of adventure and touch my emotions and very inspirational. Adrien is traveling in the blinding snow and comes upon an cabin where he least expected it. He meets Mary who is a widow and trying to survive on her own. Mary was so hard working and very stubborn at times and so brave. It would be a very hard life to live in the wilderness. He also has a mule with him, they had quite an adventure at times caring for the mule, trying to keep it out of the winter elements. The mule added so much to the story. The characters were really real to me. I received this book from Celebrate Lit and was not required to leave an positive review.
